One World Trade Center

Sustainability was one of the main criteria when building the 541-meter-high One World Trade Center, as the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey had placed strict requirements on the replacement of Portland cement with cement additives (such as fly ash, granulated slag, etc.).

The project also called for particularly high-quality concrete to achieve the required compressive strength of up to 97 MPa. By using Green Sense® Concrete technology, it was possible to replace 71% of the Portland cement with selected cement additives like fly ash and granulated slag. All construction requirements were met.

BASF products in use

An eco-efficiency analysis measured the environmental impact of the sustainable concrete. The method used in the analysis was certified by NSF International (National Sanitation Foundation, a government organization for health and safety) and compared the concrete used in construction with a reference concrete and illustrated the savings. These savings were generated by products such as MasterSure.

This product helps the concrete maintain its consistency and stay processable for longer, as well as improving its early and final strength. In addition, MasterGlenium helped significantly reduce water and accelerate the setting process, while MasterSet maintained consistency control across long transport distances. Together with our Master Builders Solutions® expertise, these products helped save 15,000 metric tons of CO2 and 504 metric tons of fossil fuels.
